About Johan Pretorius

I am the Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Universal Healthcare an independent, multinational healthcare management and software technology group formed in 2009. During my tenure as CEO the company has grown from humble beginnings into one of the top four industry players in healthcare management, providing services to a growing base of more than 30 health insurance funds, medical schemes, and other blue chip corporate clients. In 2018 I expanded Universal’s business interests to the United States with the establishment of Universal.one, Universal.one Inc. is an affiliate of the South African parent company. Universal Healthcare also has a presence in the Indian Ocean islands with representation in the UK and Europe. I am a licensed medical doctor with an MBA (cum laude). I have been active in the South African healthcare industry as a practicing physician and healthcare management expert for more than three decades during which time I have, among others, served as Chairperson of the industry body for healthcare funders. I am recognised as an authority and thought leader in healthcare innovation and management, healthcare administration, health insurance, managed care, pharmaceutical benefit management and healthcare technology solutions, including digital healthcare solutions with international application. More recently I have taken up the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the multi-national holding company of the Universal Healthcare Group.Universal is a successful, privately held organisation, the largest of its kind in South Africa. The business has grown to more than 16 subsidiaries touching the lives of more than 10 million people and has a staff of approximately 1 worldwide. The Group comprises both start-ups and well-established group subsidiaries that have been incorporated and expanded through organic growth and acquisitions. Some of the businesses in the group have been industry pioneers providing services to the healthcare sector for close to 80 years. Under my direction the Universal Healthcare Group has become a leader in third-party administration, integrated healthcare management, pharmaceutical benefit management, corporate wellness, health insurance, and healthcare software technology services offering a full suite of managed care services, leading low-income health insurance services, occupational health, corporate health and employee wellness programmes, alternative payment gateways, pharmaceutical benefit management, and claims processing and switching
