About Johan van Praet

Some of my early research ideas developed into an EDA product that is used by customers worldwide to design processors for next generation digital devices, for wireless communication, deep learning, artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, biomedical applications, the internet of things, and similar. During my Ph.D. research at Imec I worked out a processor modeling methodology for retargetable compilation and application-specific processor (ASIP) design. I hold patents for this research and my Ph.D. thesis on this topic was awarded the IBM Belgium prize for computer science 1998. In 1996 I co-founded Target Compiler Technologies with three Imec colleagues, as an Imec spin-off, combining our previous research results to make the IP Designer/IP Programmer product. My technical responsibility at Target was the processor architecture description language nML, its translation to the internal processor model for our compilation and simulation tools, and its translation to synthesizable RTL (Verilog and VHDL). Target Compiler Technologies was acquired in February 2014 by Synopsys, where I currently continue the same work on the ASIP Tools "ASIP Designer/ASIP Programmer" as manager of the ASIP modeling and implementation team.
