About Johan Verlinde

As a water management professional, I have spent the past decade advancing climate adaptation and resilience strategies for urban areas. Since graduating from the Technical University of Delft, I have applied my expertise to the City of Rotterdam, where I have held various roles, including asset manager and program manager for the Rotterdam Climate Adaptation Plan. From 2019 to 2021, I was a Fellow of the PUB Singapore Water Academy, where I deepened my knowledge and skills in climate adaptation. In my current position, I lead the "Rotterdam Weatherwise" program, which aims to prepare the city for climate hazards such as heavy rainfall, heat, and drought. By collaborating with stakeholders from different sectors, including citizens, private enterprises, and water boards, we are taking a holistic approach to climate adaptation. In addition to implementing public space solutions, we recognize the importance of climate-proofing private spaces. From 2023 to 2026, our program has set a goal of realizing 50 climate adaptive measures in the public space and improving 15 squares with blue-green solutions. These goals will require close collaboration with stakeholders, as well as innovative design and engineering solutions. My work has also involved international collaboration, particularly through C40 Cities Climate Leader Group and connecting delta cities, as well as the sister city cooperation with Jakarta. These experiences have broadened my perspective and taught me how to integrate diverse viewpoints into a comprehensive strategy. My ultimate passion is to integrate adaptation measures with rapid urban growth, making cities more sustainable and livable for all.
