About Johan Wens

Johan Wens serves as a part-time general practitioner (GP) in Ekeren, Antwerp, Belgium. He is Professor of General Practice/Family Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Primary and Interdisciplinary Care at the University of Antwerp, Belgium and Visiting Professor in Family Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Hue - Vietnam. He lectures on evidence based medicine, chronic care delivery, healthcare management and palliative care. He is an examiner to undergraduate physicians and graduating GPs. His main research interests are in the fields of chronic care delivery and interdisciplinary healthcare, with a particular focus on multi-morbidity and poly-pharmacy. He is involved in various research projects related to treatment adherence, therapeutic patient education, healthy ageing, informal caregivers and palliative care. He is director of several Masters and PhD theses, and has published over 100 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Professor Wens represents his university department in several regional and national task forces, serving on numerous committees and advisory boards such as the National Institute for Sickness and Invalidity Insurance, the National Council for Quality Promotion in Health Care, the High Council for GPs and Specialists, and Domus Medica – the Flemish association of GPs. He also serves as chairman of Palliative Help Antwerp, the Diabetes Interactive Education Program and Primary Care Diabetes Europe.
