About Johannes Preiner

My research focuses on dynamic protein – protein and protein - lipid interactions, antibody-antigen recognition and structural dynamics of (membrane) proteins. I have applied novel theoretical concepts to membrane protein unfolding, have pioneered higher harmonic AFM imaging of biological membranes in liquids, and have given the simultaneous topography and recognition imaging technique a solid methodical background. Furthermore I was one of the first European researchers working with the HS-AFM. Using this instrument I have done pioneering work on dynamic antibody-antigen recognition on different bacterial and viral surfaces, and have established a method to determine the flexibility of individual membrane protein moieties. In the last two years part of my work was focused on the development of new support concepts for planar lipid bilayers with embedded purified and reconstituted membrane proteins that led to the development of streptavidin-crystal based partially suspended membranes.
