Professional Summary An accomplished academic and entrepreneur, I am currently serving as a tenured Associate Professor in the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta. With a robust educational background, I possess a first degree in Mathematics and Computing from the University of Malta, a Master's in Computer Science, and a PhD in Theoretical Machine Learning, both from the University of New Brunswick, Canada. My academic journey intertwines seamlessly with my entrepreneurial spirit, reflected in my co-founding of a successful software development company in 2003. Academic Excellence and Research Interests My tenure in academia is marked by a profound dedication to research and teaching in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Specializing in Machine Learning, Search and Optimization, and Game Theory, my expertise particularly shines in the development and application of deep learning models, computer vision, pattern recognition, and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. These focus areas not only demonstrate my commitment to advancing knowledge in AI but also to contributing valuable insights to the academic community. Industry Experience and Entrepreneurial Ventures Before my academic tenure, I garnered extensive experience in the IT industry, working as a professional software developer. This practical exposure provided me with a unique perspective that blends theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. In 2003, I channeled this experience into entrepreneurship, co-founding a software development company. Leading this venture to success until my exit in November 2019, I demonstrated not only my technical acumen but also my strategic and leadership capabilities. Current Endeavors and Future Aspirations My current research projects are at the cutting edge of technology, focusing on applying modern deep learning techniques, especially convolutional neural networks and Transformer architectures, to tackle complex problems in academia, business, and industry.
