Background

About John Agens

I am John Agens MD. I began my career in 1989 with a solo practice internal medicine in Turnersville, NJ. Concurrently, I was medical director of Harvest Village in Atco, NJ, a continuing care retirement community. In 1993 I moved to Wisconsin and joined Midelfort Clinic -Mayo Health Systems, now called Eau Claire Clinic in Eau Claire Wisconsin. I obtained my geriatrics CAQ in 1994 and have recertified 3 times since, most recently in 2014. During my 10 years at Midelfort Clinic I spent 4 years on their Board of Directors obtaining training in six sigma, quality as a business strategy, and process improvement. In 2003 I was recruited as a geriatrician to help found the Center for Chronic Care at Capital Health Plan, a non-profit mixed model HMO, where I targeted the sickest patients by HCC scores, improved quality for these members and lowered costs. During this same 5 years I presented our data to the Alliance for Community Health Plans. I also had students from FSU College of Medicine rotate through our offices as Assistant Professor of Geriatrics. In 2008 I went for full time teaching as Associate Professor of Geriatrics and Clerkship Director for the required clerkship. I became Education Director for the whole course for five years. This involved annual site visits and monthly teleconference calls to keep the curriculum comparable across campuses. I would say my teaching style has been student centered helping students obtain the resources they need to be successful. Likewise in patient care activities through FSUSeniorHealth I have been patient centered focusing on patient and family goals of care. During the pandemic I successfully and rapidly navigated challenges of delivering the required Primary Care Geriatrics Clerkship over six regional campuses and in April through June 2020 100% virtually, used a hybrid method after that. I am looking forward to the next exciting stage of my life.
