Background

About John Barbuto

The human brain has never been challenged as it is now. This is an era of exponential change. Artificial Intelligence, and in particular machine/deep learning, are creating a future that will challenge how individuals find work and stay employed, how businesses succeed and how societies maintain stability. Our rapidly changing world will create opportunities and challenges that will require novel and creative educational, social and business strategies. At the intersection of these changes and strategies lies the human brain. I bring long practical experience in neuroscience and addiction (relevant to the science of behavioral change). I bring practical experience in the behavioral issues of organizational change. I’m developing further perspectives from machine learning - particularly as that field shapes neuroscience opportunity. I use these backgrounds to frame insights for human work and human products in this era. We must also begin to have vision beyond this era - to the next era where we will work beyond human brains - with perspectives not native to human thought. Already deep learning systems such as Google's DeepMind are revealing new strategies of thinking (such as was revealed by AlphaGo when defeating Lee Sedol, the world’s best Go player). Yet, this is only the beginning. Neuroscience and adaptive skill are now critical to how we keep up with rapid change. We must build tomorrow with people, products and insights that empower humans rather than making us obsolete. We and our intelligent machines will define the character of our future. I use my perspectives to help make it a good future. By the way, LinkedIn requires that I define an industry from its list. But, there is no appropriate category. I'd like one called "neuroscience for products and systems"; however, that isn't an option. So, I chose "Executive Office" as a metaphor.
