About John Breland

When I was younger, I fell in love with programming. I enjoyed Visual Basic 6 and tolerated Cobol, but it was data structures and server programing MUD games with C that captured me. However, like many a young person, the ocean lured me away with its siren call of troubleshooting distributed computer control systems, gas turbines and refrigerators. During a satisfying 15-year career as a Marine Technician with the Royal Canadian Navy, I became a leader and learn to be led. I was both a mentor to many and found good mentors to guide me. I developed the skills to quickly integrate with any team and the skills to work independently to get the job done. Now that I have a young family and have grown much, I find it is time to leave the pursuit of drug smugglers and pirates as well as the long lingering months at sea, to the next generation to be called. And, once more, I turn my eyes back to my love of programming and the crafting of algorithms. I used the discipline and the organizational skills the Navy taught me along with my innate desire, nay, need to learn new things to drive me in my new quest to learn modern C#, Java, and JavaScript. This then introduce me to the beauty of Functional Programming with Node and React and TypeScript. Only to follow these languages with youthful Go/Golang. Of course, programming languages can not stand on their own and, in a short time, I have learned to use the building blocks of tools like git, Entity Framework, Visual Studio, AWS EBS, PostgreSQL, Spring, and Linux (Fedora is my favourite…) to name a few to round out my crafting abilities. So, if you are looking for someone who is very adaptable; who will work hard to quickly integrate into your team either locally or remotely; someone who believes in putting in more value then he takes out; and, one who handles pressure like he has swam upstream through it for 15 years then send me a message.
