Background
About John Brett
At 16 yrs I went to Nescot to be a Carpenter and study for City and Guilds achieving advanced craft, level 3 certificate.I worked for a small company,Harry Freeman Ltd That did refurbishments work for Barclays Banks We made desks with drawers by hand in those days The first recession that I knew about, hit and I became self employed at 21 years old.A short spell working for Howe and Whites working mainly in government buildings in Central London including Buckingahm Palace. Then working for a developer and running my own small team of Carpenters. Also working for various shopfitters in Town working on restaurants and premises across the South. As I have gotten older we have started to do more domestic work in peoples homes. And also working in high value properties fitting bespoke furniture, kitchens and bedrooms. My passion for motorcycling and travel and combining the two has become more important to me.I am active in a number of a Motorcycle club and charities.I was given the opportunity to become a commercial instructor I became a certified motorcycle instructor (DVSA) approx seven years ago a level 3 award.I also passed my observers/instructors badge for the IAM (A road safety charity)and I have now passed my National Observers badge a very high standard of riding and teaching/coaching is required.(2020)and is a level 3 IMI award.I have a bout of illness late 2017. It calls for some re evaluation of work and personal commitments. As these life events should do. Getting back to health, fitness and work.I was lucky enough to be offered the role of sessional Tutor at Nescot Then the next year offered a full time post.which was one of my life ambitions. Now in mid 2020 teaching, engaging and just staying in touch with students from a distance.Update 2021Four years on at Nescot with a lot of hard work having been done to provide resources and drawings in the workshops Then covid, change of tack, online and remote teaching for full time, apprentices and adult evening students.Doubling up,there theory while in lockdown and provide some connection with the outside world Together with some pastoral care of students of all ages to keep them engaged. Lots of hard work and very tough times for some advice I enjoyed helping others through it.Now Hopefully some improvements to every bodys situation and I am now looking for more flexible working. Still using my training and soft skills but maybe aimed at older students and a slightly higher level and an increase in salary, hopefully!
