About John Burnett

Hi :) I'm John. I'm a multimedia artist, researcher, and programmer specializing in immersive experiences, virtual reality, and the interaction between graphics and sound. I'm currently a researcher at IRCAM and received my PhD at UC San Diego in the field of Computer Music. As a graduate researcher, I was part of the Sonic Arts Research and Development group which specialized in realtime ray-traced audio spatialization. My primary role was the application of this technology to virtual reality environments. In this role I built a system for spatial audio and volumetric video recording of musical experiences. As an artist, I've created solo works ranging from live performances with realtime audiovisual components to installation works which use depth sensors and spatial audio to meld the audience into the environment. I've also worked as a projection designer and a sound designer in theatrical contexts. Technically, I'm most interested in the overlap of audio synthesis with procedural graphics. I work in environments such as Unreal Engine, Unity, TouchDesigner, SuperCollider, and Pure Data. As a software engineer, I work in C/C++, C#, Python, and Haskell.
