About John Byrne

I am an NUIGalway medical graduate with over 10 years medical experience which covers both the public and private healthcare settings. I have naturally graduated to a "management" in my last role. My role in the hospital as the Lead Medical Officer adapted along with the hospital needs and patients needs have evolved. Along with my clinical role, I led a cohort of doctors within the hospital. I have qualifications in Lean Management which I naturally apply to my thinking and approach to all processes and problems, be that my working life or my peronsal life. In 2019 I completed my MSc in Healthcare Management in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, which has had a profound effect on how I manage/lead projects. As part of my MSc project I implemented a hospital wide project focusing on medication management at transition points within the hospital setting. The project was implemented oveThe project was selected as a finalist at the national healthcare awards in 2019. The project yielded highly significant results which have improved patient safety and processes. I firmly believe there is a fundamental difference between "management" and "leadership". I naturally tend to the latter. One can not expect people to follow unless you demonstrate the ability to lead effectively and by example. I have developed the necessary skills to approach problems with a positive, logical and systematic thinking which helps me arrive at the most balanced and effective solution from a work process, patient safety and cost effective aspect. I have the ability to work effectively as a team leader or as a member of a team. After completing my MSc in the RCSI in 2019 I embarked on a new masters in Business Administration with Durham University in the UK (ranked number 7 online MBA in the world by the Financial Times) for which I was awarded a scholarship in October 2019. I am nearing the end of my first year in the MBA and it has been a wonderful and compelling experience working with people from all over the world from totally different backgrounds to my own. In the world of COVID, there has never been a better time to study an MBA and learn new skills and knowledge, particularly in the areas of strategic management, leadership, project management. I hope to use these skills going forward along with my MSc and my extensive background in Medicine to bring about change which is both innovative and meaningful in Medicine and which has the patient at the core of its focus.
