For many educators,"professional development" frequently elicits groans and feelings of time wasted. I believe more needs to be done to provide engaging, relevant, and actionable professional learning so educators feel that their time is respected and that they are supported in their work. Especially given how difficult it is being an educator today. For the last several years I have been working to provide such experiences so teachers feel confident in integrating news literacy into their curriculum across grade levels and subject areas. It is a point of pride for me whenever a teacher thanks me after they attend one of my sessions and that the feel their time was well spent. I was a middle and secondary school teacher for 13 years teaching a wide range of Social Science courses including honors and AP level. I most enjoyed teaching upper-grade electives and 7th grade. I coached Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum debate with my students and I was a mentor teacher to 2 student teachers through the University of Illinois at Chicago.
