About John Cameron
Captain John Cameron joined the staff of the Charleston Branch Pilots’ Association in 2009 as a consultant for government and public affairs, industry liaison, port business development, and port safety and security, and became Executive Director in 2011. As founder of TradeWorthy, Cameron continues to offer marine safety, security, and operational risk management services; and admiralty expert witness services, on an as needed basis. He serves as consultant to South Carolina’s Savannah River Maritime Commission, and provides port assessments for businesses seeking to expand or relocate supply chains and infrastructure. Captain Cameron retired from the Coast Guard in 2007, as Captain of the Port and Sector Commander, Charleston, leading all Coast Guard operations throughout South Carolina and Georgia, including direction of search and rescue, marine environmental protection, port safety and security, and federal maritime law enforcement. In his prior tour from he led Marine Safety Operations for the Port of New York, and was assigned to the New York City Mayor's staff to coordinate port security and marine operations throughout the recovery period. During the Iran-Iraq War in 1988 and 1989, Cameron served as supervisory inspector for the Kuwaiti National Oil Tanker Fleet under U.S. Navy protection. He also served as Commander of the Coast Guard’s Salvage and Emergency Response Team, providing on-scene engineering oversight of major shipping accidents. Cameron holds a BS in Marine Engineering from the Coast Guard Academy, and MSE’s in Aerospace Engineering and Naval Architecture from the University of Michigan. Board seats include the South Carolina Emergency Response Commission, American Salvage Association Executive Board, the Propeller Club of Charleston, and Charleston Community Sailing, a non-profit sailing center for local youth.
