About John Cheeran

John Cheeran is a journalist with 24 years of experience as editor, newsroom manager, columnist and reporter. Currently he is Senior Assistant Editor with The Times of India in Hyderabad. He writes a blog titled ‘Arrackistan’ for The Times of India (http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Arrackistan/). Starting the career as a sports reporter in 1995 with The Indian Express group in Kerala, Cheeran has played key roles in setting up The Times of India’s online portal in DNA’s Bangalore edition in 2008 and The Times of India’s four editions in Kerala in 2011-12. An alumnus of the Asian College of Journalism, Bangalore,[1995], Cheeran wrote on sport for The Indian Express, Kerala; The Asian Age, Delhi; The Pioneer, Delhi; The Times of India, Delhi. Between 2001 and 2008, he had a seven-year stint with Gulf News in Dubai. In 2005, he attended a week-long editorial workshop conducted by Reuters in Dubai. Cheeran reported the Cricket World Cup held in England for The Pioneer and a host of other international events in tennis, golf, athletics and football in India and abroad during his time as a sport reporter. Between 1987 and 1995, Cheeran had been a regular contributor for Sportsworld, Calcutta, and various Malayalam newspapers, including Malayala Manorama, Madhyamam, Deshabhimani, Kerala Kaumudi, Express and Deepika. Cheeran, in an earlier avatar, had worked as a sales engineer in Madras in 1994 with Elpro International Ltd, Pune. Cheeran has a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and British History as well as a diploma in Electrical Engineering. He lives currently in Kochi, Kerala.
