Executive Chairman of The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and Senior Adviser, Centricus; formerly Director-General and Chief Executive of IISS 1993-2023. Previously Special adviser to the Chairman of Reliance India and member of the International Advisory Board; Special Adviser to the Chairman of Future Pipe Dubai; member of the International Advisory Board of the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK). Frequent speaker on geo-political trends; regular consultant on geo-political due diligence to many firms and individuals internationally. Author of Harvard Business School Review article in September 2016 entitled:'Why Your Company Needs a Foreign Policy', that has been influential in alerting businesses to the need to treat geopolitical opportunity and risk at the Board level. Created the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore convening, for the first time ever, in 2002, Asian defence ministers for multilateral consultations. Meeting annually since then, the Shangri-La Dialogue has become Asia's premier defence meeting, and an institution in its own right. Established the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain in 2004, bringing together the national security establishments of the Gulf and key outside powers. This summit has become the key annual gathering at which the pulse of Gulf security is taken and security policy transparently debated. Have advised businesspersons and companies in the defence, private equity, asset management, telecommunications, commercial shipping, insurance, extractive mining, oil, and gas sectors, as well as advanced technology industries.
