About John Cockrell

I have a very unique background in emergency services, healthcare, and adult education. I began my emergency services career in 1996 as a volunteer firefighter/EMT. Since then, I have 26 years experience in the field as a career firefighter/ EMS provider; 15 of those years include experience as a critical care flight paramedic. I have 16 years’ experience in higher education as an educator and instructional designer, creating and facilitating credit and continuing education courses in allied health and career tech programs. I am very experienced using learning management systems and software. I have vast experience in successful program/course evaluations and learner assessment methods. I absolutely love training firefighters and EMS providers, and have had the privilege of training countless men and women who have successful careers. I hold a BA in Social Sciences, and a Master's Degree in Adult Education and Training. I have led two community college paramedic training programs through the entire EMS Education Program accreditation process, developing one from the ground up. I enjoy speaking at conferences, and teaching all varieties of EMS con-ed topics. I am currently full-time faculty and the Emergency Medical Services Education Program Director for Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, a critical care paramedic for Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a critical care paramedic for CARE ambulance in Iowa City. I am also a freelance content writer and contributor of EMS content for Pocket Prep. I teach the Iowa Critical Care Paramedic program for Hawkeye, and am leading the CCP curriculum update for the State. I also serve as a volunteer site visitor for CoAEMSP, for the accreditation of paramedic education programs.
