About John Devries

John DeVries is an internationally award-winning director/writer/producer based in Cape Town, South Africa. He believes in the transformative and culture-shaping power of film and as such, has spent much of his career as a documentary filmmaker in conflict zones. He strives to use his experiences in these environments to tell narrative stories that are engaging, thought-provoking, and inspire change in the world around him. Over the past 14 years, John has worked in over 12 different countries in commercials music videos, feature films, lifestyle TV and documentaries. This wide range of experience has given him a deep respect and appreciation for other cultures and customs making it easier for him to work in just about any environment. John also has many years of experience working with large brands and organisations such as: Volvo, Facebook, Toyota, UNICEF, WWF, Atari, Discovery and Eurosport to name a few. He currently has two narrative films on the festival circuit: “The Other Side” - a sci-fi action thriller short / proof of concept (2021) “The Stranger” - an historical South African “ Western” short / proof of concept (2020) John is a co-owner of the Cape Town based production company, TH Films.
