About John Eric Tiessen
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois of Chicago where I have gained experience in original device development, simulation software, and hands on lab work. With my diverse set of skills I will be an asset to any organization’s research and engineering endeavors. In my previous work with the Department of Physics at UIC I performed original research with a focus on applied physics and simulation. In particular, my research is geared towards numerical modeling and simulation of electrons in engineered semiconductor systems as well as electromagnetic fields using the Finite Difference & Runge-Kutta methods. My core strength is translating complex problems that are impractical to solve analytically into tractable numerical problems in software. I have demonstrated the ability to work entirely remote where from 2019 - 2020 I presented & simulated two original device concepts which were accepted for publication (see CV). Prior to going remote, I worked in the semiconductor industry where I researched methods and applied them under minimal oversight to gather and analyze X-ray diffraction data. I also wrote custom software in Python 3 for future analysis of this data. I take great pride in my ability to perform independent work while producing practical results. This outcome-oriented approach has been a theme across my other projects while working for EPIR and Sivananthan Laboratories. The skills and methodology that I utilize are applicable to a broad variety of industrial problems as well as a diversity of labs and industries; key highlights of which can be seen on my CV. I am eager to grow beyond my academic experience and expand my skillset working on new and interesting problems that can be solved and understood via detailed numerical modeling and analysis.
