About John Fleming

Having an interdisciplinary background allows me to identify problems from multiple vantage points. This helps me innovate and design programs and systems that meet growing demand and support positive, meaningful change. I am a creative problem solver who works through complexity, finding what is germane, then making an informed decision and communicating the outcome and related implications. With a futuristic view, I often identify with clarity what is unknown, or not yet obvious to others. I uncover ways to develop programs that fill gaps. As a young academic, criminology was a relatively new discipline I championed and grew with my faculty. Later, with a focus on youth justice, I developed the first youth justice diploma program in British Columbia. As a clinical counsellor, I grew tired of seeing clients recycle the same problem. It was time to help people break the cycle, so I created a new post-modern psychotherapy aimed at helping clients break those cycles. In essence, I research, study and develop expertise so the knowledge can be passed on and in turn, help strengthen the sector. In my current role as a Dean at Douglas College, some of my recent accomplishments include:* Securing the highest fill rates (enrollment) in the institution, approximately 98%* Partnering with external institutions to raise the academic profile of Douglas College * Introducing and developing new programs for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences One of the highest compliments paid to me by a senior leader earlier this year was this “People are always a little better behaved when John is around.” While I see the best in people, this compliment suggests that I set a standard of excellence, not only for myself but for others to aspire towards.
