About John Freeman

I began my career at Manchester Metropolitan University researching protective coatings and plasma physics. In this role I gained experience with a wide range of low pressure gauges, vacuum pumps, and low pressure plasma reactors for physical and chemical vapour deposition, and mass flow controllers. From there I have moved into the sensors engineering industry where I have built a satisfying career constructing, maintaining, and using a wide variety of scientific instruments: At Scientific Analysis Instruments I worked with gas chromatograph mass spectrometers, secondary ion mass spectrometers, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometers. I constructed, installed and maintained these, and also provided customer training. At Meech Marketing, I was responsible for fault finding electronic lifestyle products, tracking down the root causes of faults, and building and bespoke testing equipment. I have found that I can work either independently or as a part of a team: At Edinburgh Instruments I have been responsible for bringing beta test instrumentation (fluorescence spectrometers and fluorescence lifetime spectrometers) to production line status, and running the initial production line single handed. As production has developed I have become part of a growing team. I have also gained experience with lasers of type 3R and lower, and training in laser safety. In the evenings I tutor Mathematics and Physics to people in my local community, up to university level.
