About John Giles

With over 50 years’ experience,(35 with UGL Infrastructure / Kilpatrick Green) and 10 with Appleseed Engineering. John is a highly experienced electrical engineer with a detailed understanding of all aspects of electrical engineering for most industries. He has a broad understanding of civil, structural, and mechanical engineering principles and practices within the infrastructure project industry.From his beginnings as an instrument design engineer, John held the position of chief engineer for UGL Power until 2015. In this role, John led and maintained the high standard of engineering service produced for UGL’s projects. He is currently Principal and Owner of Appleseed Engineering.John’s wide and varied experience covers most industries including hydro-electric, diesel, & gas turbine power generation, HV power transmission systems, HV power distribution, water and wastewater treatment, water distribution, control & instrumentation, railway power distribution, microwave and communications networks, building services, and process automation.John led the development of ‘Safety In Design’ approaches within UGL Infrastructure, introducing tools such as the CHAIR process and HAZOP/CHAZOPs reviews. He has facilitated more than 100 risk management workshops.Appleseed Engineering provides training (over 230 courses to date) and facilitation for Safety in Design Workshops, AS/NZS and AS2067 training. Training is in person or via Zoom. thousand people have completed one of Appleseed Engineering's courses.John is dedicated to the development and continual improvement of the engineering profession. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, a past Member of CIGRE Australian Panel AP B2, and a Member of Standards Australia Committees EL43 (AS2067) and EL52 He holds Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics, and also a Masters Degree in Engineering Science from the University of New South Wales.
