John H. Healey, MD, FACS Chief, Orthopaedic Oncology Service, Vice-Chair, Department of Surgery Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Weill Medical College of Cornell University John H. Healey, MD, FACS, an alumnus of Yale College and the University of Vermont College of Medicine has spent the last 30 years in New York City at Hospital for Special Surgery and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is one of the world’s leading surgical specialists treating bone and soft tissue tumors (sarcomas). Dr. Healey has held many leadership positions throughout orthopaedics, including service as a Board member of the Orthopaedic Research Society, Academic Orthopaedic Society, and the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, as well as President of the International Society of Limb Salvage. His scholarly efforts include over 250 peer-reviewed publications, 44 book chapters and one text. He is Deputy Editor of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, on the Editorial Board of Journal of Orthopaedic Science, and has held editorial positions at the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Surgical Oncology, JAAOS, and Skeletal Radiology. Metabolic bone disease, or what he considers applied bone biology, complements his focus on oncology. Congressional funding for state cancer registries stemmed from his advocacy and Readers Digest article on the subject. A dedicated educator, he has received his institution’s annual teaching award numerous times. Dr. Healey maintains a basic science laboratory, conducting research about the influence of tumor stem cells and local environment on cancer behavior, as well as, studying the molecular genetics of bone cancers, and anti-resorptive strategies to prevent prosthetic loosening. He has received many NIH and OREF grants and the American Cancer Society Career Development Award, and serves on national and international peer-review grant funding agencies.
