About John Helzer

I am currently working as a Mechanical Engineer at Teledyne ISCO in Lincoln, NE. I obtained my M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with expected graduation in August 2025. I also worked as a graduate research assistant in the UNL NIMBUS lab. My research focused on nonlinear control strategies for a multicopter with a suspended payload for automated bridge inspection. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2023, also from UNL. During my undergraduate degree, I gained valuable professional and technical experience as an intern and an undergraduate research assistant. I also helped start the Big Red Satellite team my freshman year, and served as a team lead for the Aerospace eXperimental Payloads team in UNL's Aerospace club, which gives undergraduate members technical and leadership experience through projects like High Altitude Balloon launches and mentoring 13 middle and high schoolers through a NASA cubesat project. In addition to my aerospace and field robotics experience, I'm also skilled with CAD modeling through SOLIDWORKS and Creo, competent at soldering and small circuits (like Arduino), and comfortable coding in C++, MATLAB, and Python, as well as ROS 1.
