Great news this Monday when the Ford Government announced that they will be crafting legislation to eliminate the criminal element from the Towing Industry in Ontario. As Coordinator of the Fair Towing Task Force, I am extremely proud of our group which has laid down the foundation. I'd like to thank the Provincial Towing Association of Ontario who spearheaded the action and our representatives from MTO, MGCS, OPP, CAA, Wreckmaster Training, the IBC, and CFIB who have contributed greatly to developing a simple and effective plan. The benefits to the public, the industry the enforcement bodies, and to your insurance costs will be significant. If you work with seasoned advisors and they are doing everything you ask them to do, it's probably time to change. As a life-long advisor of corporate, government and not for profit organizations I've learned that the downfall of many organizations is to underuse the experts you've hired. As we as hired guns get older our biggest regrets are accepting a no from our clients. In the early days of the donut wars in Canada, I urged a client to diversify its product line. They said they had to stick to their knitting. We would have had a five-year jump on our major competitor. When we suggested putting a drive-thru window I was told,"Oh, John people will never line up in their cars for coffee and donuts." Don't get me wrong, these were some of the smartest people I've ever worked with. So if your advisors aren't making you feel uncomfortable, it's probably time you changed. About this time I had a young entrepreneur who liked being challenged and when we had gone locally in a completely different direction than our huge national competitor had taken, we won. We had six stores they had 6 thousand. The phone call from our national competitor went something like this,"You're killing us. How much do you want to get out?" Our firm always had a secret weapon.
