About John Hoefs

Dr. Hoefs graduated with a BS from California Lutheran University in 1966 and graduated from George Washington University Medical School in 1970. After completion of Residency in Internal Medicine from USC-LA County General in 1975, he studied liver disease at the USC Liver Unit from 1975-1980 completing a clinical fellowship and NIH fellowship. He joined the University of California Irvine in 1980 to become the director of the Liver Disease Program. He was awarded an NIH grant in 1982 for studies of portal shunting and brought the prestigious NIH HALT-C trial for treatment of hepatitis C to UCI in He has been part of most of the pharmaceutical sponsored treatment studies of chronic hepatitis C since 1990. He has particular interests in the treatment of hepatitis C, non-invasive evaluation of patients with liver disease with the quantitative Liver Spleen Scan and research into the cause and nature of ascites. The large clinical program at UCI has treated thousands of patients with hepatitis C over the last 10 years. Recently, Dr Hoefs was the co-founder of HEPATIQ_LLC which developed the automated quantitative liver-spleen scan (HEPATIQ). In the HALT-C trial, the perfused hepatic mass (PHM) and functional spleen volume (fSV) were powerful predictors of clinical outcomes over an 8 year period with no additional benefit from fibrosis stage and routine liver blood tests.
