About John Hummitzsch

Working with the Milwaukee Bucks provided an enriching experience for a sports enthusiast, but there came a time when I was ready to transition out of professional sports. When I found an opportunity within the youth and recreation department at the Pabst Farms YMCA, I embraced the chance to enhance my professional skills in an environment that integrates two of my favorite things: operational excellence and Christian principles. Over my 13-year tenure with the YMCA, I have advanced through increasingly senior roles. Beginning as a youth and adult sports coordinator, I supported departmental management under a director’s guidance. Today, I hold the position of Branch Executive Director, overseeing all branch operations, including nine departments and a team of over 300 staff members. Beyond my daily responsibilities, I have been honored to assume leadership roles within both the Pabst Farms YMCA and the broader YMCA movement. In 2022, I was elected to the Board of the Upper Midwest Alliance of YMCAs, contributing to the advancement of YMCAs across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In this capacity, I focus on enhancing resources in human capital, innovation, advocacy, and operational support. Since 2019, I have been actively involved in the New Y Leaders program planning and implementation committee, which nurtures emerging YMCA leaders through comprehensive educational initiatives. Additionally, as a Certified Introduction to Fiscal Management Trainer for YMCA of the USA, I have trained approximately 100 staff members in sound fiscal practices. My approach emphasizes collaboration to drive excellence and efficiency, leading to significant program successes through strategic partnerships and relationships. I have also gained experience in long-term capital asset planning and overseeing multiple renovation projects at the YMCA at Pabst Farms. I have also played a pivotal role in expanding the Watertown Area YMCA’s Ehlinger Center and contributed to the design team for a new YMCA in Watertown, ensuring adherence to equipment budgets, accurate layouts, and coordinated staff training.
