About John Knight

Hi, I’m John, a data scientist with a passion for uncovering insights through statistics. Over the years, I’ve worked across different industries—sports betting, education research, and healthcare—applying statistical modeling and data-driven decision-making to complex problems. For more than a decade, I was self-employed, building statistical models for betting markets in sports such as soccer, golf, and basketball. That experience sharpened my ability to work with large datasets, predict outcomes, and develop data-driven strategies in a highly competitive environment. From there, I transitioned into academia, working at UTRGV on education research, and now I apply my skills in healthcare as a data analyst at DHR Health, where I analyze medical data to help support research and patient care improvements in the Rio Grande Valley. I’ve co-authored three published papers—two on math education, and one in healthcare regarding hip fractures. I’ve also presented my work at conferences like IConSES and I give statistics presentations to our medical residents. I am currently working on clustering time series data for the thesis of my MS in Applied Statistics & Data Science, which I’ll be completing this year. My technical toolkit includes R, Python, SQL, Excel, and Power BI, and I have experience with a broad range of statistical methods—from regression and survival analysis to machine learning and time series forecasting. I also enjoy data visualization, transforming raw numbers into meaningful stories that drive better decisions. Outside of work, I like spending time with my wife and daughters, watching films and sports, hiking, traveling, and playing golf.
