About John Land

I am a senior commercial litigation barrister and competition law specialist at Bankside Chambers in Auckland. I was previously with national law firm Kensington Swan for 26 years, including 20 years as a partner. I have a particular reputation for leading and managing high value, complex commercial disputes. Examples of large scale complex litigation managed by me include major franchising litigation for Dymocks Booksellers in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Privy Council, and major patent litigation for Eli Lilly relating to the use of chemical compounds for medical purposes. I have a particular profile in the field of competition law. I have been senior counsel in a number of major competition law cases including: • For the plaintiff retailers (including Foodstuffs, Woolworths, Farmers, and other major retailers) in the credit card interchange fees case against Visa, MasterCard and the major trading banks • For Gullivers Pacific in the High Court opposing the application by Qantas and Air New Zealand for authorisation of their airline alliance • For the New Zealand Rugby Union in the High Court proceedings relating to authorisation of their player transfer regulations • For a major airline in defending the air cargo cartel case brought by the Commerce Commission. I was the Director of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand between 2014 and 2016. In 2012 I was a presenter of the New Zealand Law Society roadshow seminar on competition law, ‘Competition Law- The Must Knows”. I have particular expertise and experience in working with and briefing competition economists. In 2016 I was appointed Teaching Fellow at Auckland Law School and was the lecturer of the Law School's company law course in semester 1. I am a former President of Auckland Toastmasters club.
