About John Lyon

Having surpassed 10 years since achieving my RN license, I reflect on my jobs working as a member of an interdisciplinary team in a busy ED, on a joint accredited Orthopedic unit and on multiple inpatient units with the welcomed challenge of floating to a variety of medical-surgical units to meet critical staffing shortages while providing compassionate care and advocacy for my patients and fellow nurses. While completing my MSN degree, and searching for a job that provided flexibility and the chance to provide individualized care using a unique skill-set, I left acute care to work as an infusion nurse in the home care setting. This was a welcomed challenge and rewarding opportunity to witness healing firsthand, build relationships and truly make a difference in the lives of these patients. After completing my MSN in Nursing Education, I accepted a position working with Alaskan Native populations and made the daring move to Alaska to work and live in the 'Last Frontier'. I've had the pleasure of working on an inpatient surgical unit with a wonderful team of staff members for three years, and in May 2019 transferred to Family Birthing Services to expand my skills and nursing expertise in a high-risk specialty caring for newborns and postpartum women, with occasional antepartum assignments. Looking to take the skills and experience of caring for patients in the post-op, pre-hospital and home care setting, I eagerly await the invitation to start the next chapter of my career working in the Perioperative setting and to fulfill my dream role via acceptance into an Operating Room Training Program to learn both the roles of Circulator and Scrub Nurse and to rotate throughout the different service lines. I also share interest in PACU and CTICU settings. To reach my career aspirations, I'm striving to excel in my current position as an experienced staff RN and nurse leader in the inpatient setting, while awaiting the opportunity to transition into Surgical Services.
