About John Maida

John Maida has been with Halliburton since 2003 where he presently holds the title of Chief Optical Science Advisor - Fiber Optic Sensing Technology Center of Excellence. He is formally educated in optical sciences, physics and technology and holds three academic degrees from the University of Houston System and holds over 125 US patents. Over the past 33 years, John has been promoting fiber optic sensor technology within the oil & gas industry enabling engineering development teams within the fields of geophysical seismic exploration and reservoir production optimization. John’s area of expertise is in photonics and optical fiber science & engineering for sensing and communications applications. He has over 37-years of experience in advanced system design concepts; optical fiber component development; and project management within the petroleum, avionics, and biomedical industries. John often gives invited talks on the uses of light and fiber optics technology for wellbore monitoring. Since 2005, he has been a regular lecturer at the University of Houston College of Engineering Technology. John is also Vice-Chair of the Photonics Society Houston Chapter at the University of Houston and Rice University. At the national level, John has been a lobbyist on Capitol Hill with the National Photonics Initiative (NPI) Taskforce on Sensors for Energy, Environment and Education promoting manufacturing technology within the US for the emerging 21st Century fields of Optics and Photonics. In this public capacity, John promotes adoption of efficient “cradle-to-grave” wellbore monitoring solutions using optical fiber technologies. Prior to his work at Halliburton, John held positions at Weatherford CiDRA Sercel/CGG Syntron GeoSciences Litton Western Geophysical (1991-1996); Teledyne Ryan Electronics (1987-1991); and the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (1984-1987).
