About John Nicholson

I am a 2022 PhD graduate in Mathematical Statistics from Clemson University. My research experience includes Gaussian process methods, computer experiments, and Bayesian statistics, with applications in the physical sciences. My PhD research involved producing novel theory in the area of constrained Gaussian processes, as well as variable selection of functional parameters in computer model calibration. I am currently an R&D Analyst with the Tampa Bay Rays. This position has given me the opportunity to employ my expertise while also fulfilling my childhood dream of being involved in professional baseball (though now in a different capacity). Specifically, I work on the International team, and my job is to generate projections for international amateur pitchers upon which stakeholders can make data driven decisions. This involves importing data and performing data QA, model building and validating, conferring with domain experts and stakeholders, employing data visualization tools, and exploring and sharing new statistical methodology.
