About John Rice

I believe computers to be the foundation of the future, so I have dedicated myself to find ways to shape that future. Growing up in rural South Carolina, computers were sparse in my earliest years. Only getting handed-down video game consoles from older relatives and having limited access to my family's already-aged PC, my young fascinations lied not in technology but building models. In elementary school, I developed a large interest in mathematics and by the start of middle school, I was gifted a computer to call my own. While not exactly becoming an interest at this point, it allowed my worldview to rapidly expand and I quickly began understanding how computer access can change someone's life. I formed years-long friendships online and, once in high school, my love for all things computer was ignited when I joined my school's engineering program. Through the numerous engineering projects, I began to truly understand the path I should take in life. While finishing a pre-college gap year, I found my way to Winthrop University and immediately knew that their computer science program was for me. There I learned a variety of paths to approaching computer science, ranging the full spectrum of abstraction layers that unite hardware and software. I furthered this comprehensive experience by also pursuing a minor in mathematics, eventually finishing my academic journey and graduating with honors in spring of 2021. Since graduating, I continue to work on a number of personal projects and seek out compelling projects to take part in. I can be easily reached at johnrice1997@pm.me.
