Protecting the environment is a high priority for me. Our ocean edge was already deteriorating from the warmer water temperatures and higher amounts of river water run-off. If you are a scuba diver you know it is getting harder and harder to find a nice place to dive. Google the images of 1990 versus 2010+. Our kids will not see the things we saw. Coal is dirty and in areas of the country that burn coal have cheap electric power and less incentive to save. Coal slurries should be enough of an incentive. Did everyone forget about the oil disaster of the gulf. Is the oil really gone or at some interstitial space in the ocean floating. It's still there. Japan's Nuclear incident may have derailed Nuke Plant expansion for another 30 years. Radiation in our Tuna? Can you put a price on that? Hurricane Sandy has people thinking about climate change. Of course you could argue as to whether we as individuals can really make a change in our lifetime or even if climate change is caused by human intervention. My opinion is that whether you agree to climate change and its cause, you should act "as if". Meaning why not do everything you can to protect the environment? It should not be about whether you will see any immediate results. You should just do the right thing. Protecting the environment and your checkbook are aligned nowadays.
