About John Scanlon
As a high school teacher my focus is on Latin (including AP Level), world history, and mythology. Digital humanities and the application of 21st century learning skills to classical studies is a key focus of my pedagogy. As a classicist my primary area of interest is Latin poetry of the Augustan period. My dissertation uses a reader-centric focus to reexamine the phenomenon of generic enrichment (sometimes known as Kreuzung der Gattungen) in Horace's "Odes" and concludes that Horace uses programmatic trees in order to enact and represent his interaction with his readers' generic expectations. Secondary areas of interest include epic, Greek tragedy, and Greco-Roman social history. My research typically revolves around the subject of metapoetry and topics like authorial self-representation, literary culture, and intertextuality.
