About John Sedgwick
John Sedgwick is visiting professor in the Department of Arts, Oxford Brookes University. He researches into the business and economic history of cinema and is currently writing a book 'The material history of cinema, 1930-70', which will be published by Springer. With his long-term collaborator Michael Pokorny he has edited an anthology of papers on the subject, and published articles in Business History, Cinema Journal, Economic History Review, Journal of Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, Journal of Applied Statistics, Journal of Cultural Economics, and Journal of Transnational Cinema. In recent years collaborated separately on articles published in the journal Film History with Dr Daniela Treveri-Gennari (Oxford Brookes) and Professor Catherine Jurca (Caltec), respectively on film audiences in Rome in the mid-1950s and Philadelphia in the mid-1930s. John has also published a monograph Filmgoing in Britain during the 1930s and with Clara Pafort-Overduin and Jaap Boter published an article in the journal Enterprise and Society comparing Dutch and British experience of filmgoing in the 1930s. With Professor Peter Miskell (Reading) and Dr Marina Nicoli (Bocconi) he compared film preferences in five Italian cities during the decade 1957 to 1966, published in the journal Enterprise and Society. Before his appointment, John worked for 25 years at London Metropolitan University, where he taught Industrial Economics, and Research Methods and at various times served as Economics Subject Group Leader, and Director of the Centre for International Business and Sustainability. He was appointed Professor of Film Economics in 2009 and then Professor of Creative Industries in 2011. He was a 0.2 Professor in the Business School, University of Portsmouth between 2013 and 2017. With Mike Pokorny and Peter Miskell, John is currently working on the increasing profitability of Hollywood and the role of sequels in this.
