About John Shields
John is an experienced educator, researcher, university leader, institution builder and team player, with deep experience in Business School accreditation and international engagement and an abiding commitment to the importance of the social sciences in business and management education and professional practice. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at the Australian National University, graduating with First Class Honours in History. He obtained his PhD in Economic History within the then Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney in 1990. In 1993 he took a lectureship in Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour at the University of New South Wales and returned to The University of Sydney in to take up a Senior Lectureship in the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and to Professor in 2010. He served as the Business School's Associate Dean Postgraduate from 2009 until 2014, Deputy Dean (Education) 2014-16, Deputy Dean and Associate Dean Education 2014-17, and Deputy Dean and Head of School, 2017-18. As Deputy Dean, John was a member of the Business School’s Executive Committee and represents the School on various University of Sydney governance bodies, including the University Executive Education Committee and the Course Planning and Curriculum Committee. From 2011 to 2022 he represented the School on the Executive Board and General Assembly of the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education and was chair of the CEMS Globalisation and Membership Committee 2015-16 and Academic Committee 2017-18. In 2019 John became the Business School's inaugural Academic Director International, a leadership position focussed on (a) developing research and educational partnerships with selected business schools internationally and (b) building the School's brand and appear to prospective students in selected countries within the Asia-Pacific region and the Indian subcontinent. He has now resumed his substantive position as Professor of HRM and Organisational Studies in the Discipline of Work and Organisational studies. His principal areas of research and teaching include performance management, reward management, executive remuneration, corporate governance, and leadership. In the HRM field, his book publications include Managing Employee Performance and Reward, Cambridge University Press, 3e, 2020, and Human Resource Management: Strategy and Practice, 11e edition, 2022 (co-authored with Alan Nankervis, Marian Baird and Jane Coffey).
