About John Thynne
I am aviation safety focussed, forward thinking, and a team player. I served for 30 years in the permanent Air Force (RAAF), as a pilot flying UH-1 Iroquois helicopters, including service in South Vietnam and the Middle East and in various staff functions including Air Force Flying Safety for which I was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross. I continued to serve in a Reserve capacity for a further 16 years and was a Senior Safety Officer for the Talisman Sabre series of international exercises from 2009 - 2015. I then worked as a civilian in the Department of Defence in Information Management for several years before moving to CASA in 2010. In 2012 I became Manager Safety Systems Office in the Office of the Director of Aviation Safety, where I was responsible for management of CASA’s surveillance framework, safety analysis, interaction with the Australian Transportation Safety Board, and, between December 2013 and December 2015, the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) certificate management team.
