About John Tran

After a decade of being involved with anatomy education and research, I can confidently share there is still so much left for us to learn! Anatomy research, education, and knowledge translation remain vital to medical procedures. However, there is a clear disconnect between the need for more anatomical research (to optimize clinical procedures) and the number of dedicated anatomy researchers working to fill this knowledge gap. I’ve experienced this first hand as a scientist working in the clinical setting. Common themes when clinical outcomes are not as expected are “we don’t know enough about the anatomy” and “there’s no literature on this”. As I reflect on my own experiences and abilities, I realized this is an area where I can contribute to our society. For this reason, I have dedicated my professional life to advocating for and generating high quality anatomy education and research content to positively impact patient outcomes. To accomplish this goal, I have taken on three roles: 1) As an assistant professor (teaching stream), I am pursuing my passion as an anatomy educator. Using this experience, I engage with students to identify gaps in traditional education pedagogy. 2) As a research scientist, I am collaborating with clinicians (pain interventionalists, surgeons, and regional anesthesiologists) to bring research from the anatomy lab to the clinic. This bench-to-bedside collaboration enables our team to use cutting edge anatomical findings to inform clinical trials while identifying knowledge translation gaps. 3) As Cofounder and CEO of DARA3D Inc, I am leading a team focused on the mission of promoting the utilization of immerging technology as a knowledge translation medium for researchers. Through the use of 3D, AR, and VR technologies, anatomical research findings can be more effectively disseminated to end knowledge users. Ultimately, our goal is to improve patient outcomes.
