About John Whitney

Dr. John Whitney is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University. He is also the Associate Chair, Graduate Education and the Assistant Dean of the Biochemistry Graduate Program, the premier thesis-based graduate program in McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Whitney received his BSc in Biological Chemistry in 2007 from the University of Guelph. He then completed his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children. From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Whitney was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington in Seattle before establishing his own independent research group in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster in 2017. Dr. Whitney is the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Microbiology and a Burroughs Wellcome Investigator in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease. He is the recipient of an Ontario Early Researcher Award, the ThermoFisher Prize from the Canadian Society of Microbiologists, a Young Investigator Award from the American Chemical Society's Division of Biological Chemistry, a New Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Molecular Biosciences, and the Melanie O'Neill New Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Chemistry's Division of Biological Chemistry. Dr. Whitney's research interests include the discovery and characterization of antibacterial toxins, the mechanisms by which they are secreted, and how their secretion by bacteria influences microbe-microbe interactions.
