About John Williamson

Background John Williamson graduated in Metallurgy from Brunel University in 1965 following a student apprenticeship with the Hawker Siddeley company High Duty Alloys (HDA) Slough. Graduate experience was gained at HDA and then at ERA Technology in Leatherhead. At ERA he was responsible for the optical and electron microscopy carried out in support of the 'Creep of Steel' group sponsored programme on the determination of long term high temperature design data for steels used in power generation. In 1984 he led a group that specialised in the assessment of remaining life of high temperature plant through both on-site and laboratory based investigations. To meet the increasing worldwide demand for beyond-design life extension his Group expanded its activities to provide services to the Petrochemical and Refining industries as well as to the Power Generation industry. In 1990 he became Business Development Manager for the Plant Assessment Services Department, which had evolved from continuing growth of the above group. His responsibilities included expanding the department’s activities in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Far East and the USA. In the latter two areas subsidiary companies were set up. In 1997 he was appointed Acting Manager of the Plant Engineering Division following a personnel reorganisation and the merger of the R&D and Assessment Services activities. John retired from full time employment in 2001 after over 34 years service. He continued his association with ERA as a Consultant. John is currently a co-director of the consultancy and services company, John Brear – Plant Integrity Cyfyngedig, which provides advanced innovative assessment procedures to aid plant owners maximise life/remaining life at design or uprated operating conditions. Such procedures utilise data from design, inspection, operation and maintenance resources.
