About Johnny Lui

When I grew up as a kid, I always enjoyed every aspect of a computer, such as the hardware that drives one and the use of the internet and the many programs that are available to download on the web. What really got me going were the server emulators that were available online for games that I enjoyed to play. This allowed me to change any aspect of the game to my likings, while also giving me a learning experience on how to program at the same time. When I was still in high school, my experience was still severely lacking, but at the same time, I felt accomplished because I learned that not many people in my school actually knew how to write even simple programs. I often found myself programming taking up a majority of my time if I am really into it. As I am moving through college, I am gaining a deeper understanding of what I have to understand to become a programmer for my career. Collaborating and communication is a key part of being in a team. Lots of planning and organization is also required. Being an iOS developer for High Development Mobile Applications Inc. was the first time I had real-life experience on planning and developing with a team. We always have to make sure that we know what we are doing and that we are doing everything on time. Previously, I worked on an application called Booksmart which is an application for college students to buy and sell books. This application heavily relies on a server, so I also made a PHP-based back-end for communication to and from the MySQL database server. This was a great learning experience for me and this application is also growing in users. I had hands-on experience on the entire application flow. I am now learning more as a Software Developer at IBM, exploring a different perspective in the industry. My skills are primarily in Java, PHP, and MySQL.
