About Joia Fishman

I obtained my M.S. in the Environmental Studies department at San Jose State University. My research focused on the successional paths and resistance to invasion of two native plant assemblages on the Oro Loma Horizontal Levee at the Oro Loma Sanitary District in San Lorenzo, California. The Oro Loma Horizontal Levee is pilot project designed to treat wastewater, provide habitat, and protect from storm surges and sea level rise. I also work as a Nursery Specialist/Biologist for Avila & Associates, an environmental consulting agency. I help grow native plants for mitigation and restoration purposes using Best Management Practices at the Sunol Native Plant Nursery (SNPN). SNPN is a phytosanitary nursery. As the phytophthora testing lead for SNPN my duties include identifying and prioritizing which plants are to be tested, scheduling testing, and maintaining testing records. I also lead a number of seed amplification projects for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) mitigation sites, including for rare and threatened California native plant species. In addition to my role at the nursery, I assist with a variety of other projects, including rare plant surveys and performance and biological monitoring. Overall, I am interested in helping create socially equitable urban ecosystems that are ecologically resilient, especially to climate change.
