About Jon Goins

I am a Deputy Chief in the Seattle Fire Department, and I've served the City of Seattle since 2004. My current role is Chief of Training, where I am responsible for developing, managing, and documenting the training of firefighters, including new recruits and experienced personnel. My division includes uniformed and civilian staff members. I have worked in the fire and EMS field since 1998. Prior to working for SFD, I worked for the North Highline Fire District just outside of the city, and before that as an ambulance EMT for Tri-Med Ambulance. During my career, I have responded to all types of incidents such as building fires, shootings, multiple casualty incidents, cardiac arrests, one helicopter crash, widespread social unrest, and a global pandemic. I have worked in numerous assignments and on many special projects within the Department, including large scale civil disturbances, and being a part of the Seattle Fire Department/City of Seattle team responding to the COVID-19 crisis. I was also elected as Vice President of IAFF Local 27, where I represented members and advocated for the safety, financial health, and benefits of Seattle Firefighters. My primary duties included dealing with discipline, grievances, and political action. I plan to use my training and experience to bring value to my organization and to make an impact on the fire service as a whole. I believe we can always improve and there is value in sharing good ideas. I hold tradition in high regard, but we shouldn't be afraid to change things when there is a better way.
