About Jon Jones

I essentially try to predict the future or understand environmental or anthropogenic phenomena using models (conceptual and numerical). My background is in physical hydrogeology, surface water - groundwater interactions and numerical modeling. In the past, I have played various roles in academia, government and environmental consulting. Some of my current and previous research interests include: data science; machine learning in the hydrologic sciences; hydrogeology issues in the Alberta Oil Sands; regional water resources; surface water – groundwater interactions; risks associated with Oil Sands mining, reclamation and closure work; mathematical modeling of flow and solute transport (classical groundwater and Integrated Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions); stochastic hydrogeology; environmental water issues related to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS); cumulative effects; fracture flow; hydrograph separation; and model uncertainty. More recently, I would add wetland hydrology (particularly in the Western Boreal Forest) and ecohydrology as more recent research interests. I started applying this expertise to water work in the Alberta oil sands for Suncor Energy in the spring of 2015.
