Background
About Jon Medline
A career that has spanned lonely regulatory drafting and financial modeling in quiet, dark offices to leading some of the most engaged and boisterous Content & Programming Operations teams. From the Hearing rooms in Ottawa/Gatineau to the corporate hallways of Canwest, Shaw, Rogers, and now CBC/Radio-Canada. From the most contentious strategy and budget sessions, to the negotiation table, to the most pressing and seminal media policy, mandate, and funding debates. From the most critical domestic media issues of our time (e.g, role of AI; online harm and disinformation; shifting business and funding models; audience migration; trust in media) to developing and deepening corporate media relationships all over the world. 25+ years of experience in progressively senior Media & Telecommunications positions across all parts of the content value chain - with a rare dual emphasis on policy / corporate advocacy and content operations across multiple technical platforms. Highlights include:(1) Developing, framing, and otherwise supporting corporate positions, honed by years of drafting comprehensive policy and licence submissions, representing four (4) different companies at Regulatory hearings, successfully leading corporate mediations and disputes, and advising on or overseeing content-related negotiations.(2) Integrating audience trending and financial metrics/models into negotiations and decision-making to develop and reinforce policy positions and lobbying efforts, refine content and advocacy strategies, and set and adjust large-scale budgets.(3) Structuring and developing teams, consistently achieving Best-in-Class survey scores for employee engagement, leadership effectiveness, and performance enablement.(4) Balancing and managing large portfolios with a complex web of supplier relationships. For example, with over 600 channels, 50+ regional line-ups, and over 170 multicultural offerings, the portfolio at Rogers Cable was one of the largest and most diverse in North America, generating annual revenues well north of C$1 billion.(5) Leveraging a deep understanding of international media issues and regimes to inform domestic positions - including oversight of CBC/Radio-Canada's relationships with international public service media such as the BBC, ABC Australia, Radio New Zealand, NPR, and so on.
