Background

About Jonathan Bassindale

I’m an architect, design educator, and curriculum innovator with over 15 years’ experience spanning practice and academia. As Associate Director: Spatial Practice at UWE Bristol, I lead the BSc Architecture, MArch, and MSc Computational Architecture programmes. My focus is on embedding inclusive, future-facing pedagogies that connect sustainability, human-centred design, and digital innovation. My teaching practice centres on speculative, research-led studio briefs that encourage students to think critically and design confidently. I’ve supervised award-winning student work and led final-year studios shortlisted for national prizes. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I value mentorship and collaboration, and I’ve worked closely with early-career academics to foster a culture of shared excellence. Alongside teaching, I develop digital tools that respond to sector challenges. I created FeedbackSpaces, an AI-supported platform for structured formative feedback, now used across disciplines and recognised with the CIOB Innovation in Education Award. I continue to develop the platform and contribute to sector-wide strategy through institutional assessment boards and an AI in Education working group. Before entering higher education full-time, I was a project architect at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, where I worked on conservation-sensitive and award-winning public projects.
