About Jonathan Binder

Institutional investors crave alpha but tend to have minimal exposure to Frontier and Emerging Markets equities. As the co-founder of Consilium Investment Management, I help such investors understand how harnessing the highly specific differentiated opportunities in these markets can be well rewarded. I have a life-long interest in far-flung nations. Born in Colombia to a tri-lingual father who worked for Royal Dutch Shell Group, I spent considerable portions of my youth in the world’s developing nations. Most notably, I spent many breaks from school in England visiting my father who was working in Cambodia. Early in my career, while living in London, my merchant banking and sell-side roles led me to early work on Mexican sovereign debt and the subsequent creation of Brady Bonds. I moved to New York initially selling international sovereign and corporate debt into U.S. institutional funds before making the change in 1990 to equities and developing a research/trading platform for selling Latin American stocks into U.S. institutions. I moved over to the buy side and ran Emerging Markets equity portfolios at America’s Trust Bank in Miami before our team joined Standard Bank, where we built up Emerging Market fund assets to over $2 billion. In 2004, my partner and I broke away to start our own firm, which ultimately became Consilium. Our first formal Frontier equity strategy started with Russell Investments when we were appointed to be one of several sub-managers to run one of the first dedicated Frontier funds for institutional investors. There, we honed the thoughtful balance between risk and opportunity required by institutions—an approach we continue today.
