About Jonathan Bryant

I am Co-Lead Director of the URBIS National Heritage Team, a Partner at Urbis and a Trusted Heritage Advisor, Placemaker and Diversity Champion. I have two Honours Degrees in Architecture and a Masters Degree in Heritage Conservation from the University of Sydney. I am an International Member of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), a member of the Twentieth Century Heritage Society of NSW and a member of Docomomo Australia. I sit on the Government House Sydney Crown Reserve Advisory Panel and the Parramatta Powerhouse Museum Design Integrity Panel. I have a passion for art and I’m a foundation member of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and a member of the Contemporary Collection Benefactors committee. I have over 25 years of professional practice in the design and construction industry in Australia with a broad range of experience including project management and residential and commercial design with a focus on adaptation and re-use of heritage buildings. I am well known in the industry for contributing informed, considered and constructive heritage advice to the government and private property sector. I am involved in all stages of project delivery from initial feasibility studies, heritage design development, preparation of appropriate heritage reports and documentation, client / consultant / consent authority liaison, and heritage conservation services through to practical completion. I have demonstrated experience with the successful delivery of complex and sensitive heritage projects. I believe that “Heritage conservation is about memory, identity, place and orientation in a changing world. People place value on a sense of continuity. Our work focuses on securing the past and managing change during the process of technical, social and economic development." I have a particular interest in retail and tourism projects. My heritage team have just delivered the landmark Capella Hotel in the historic former Education Building on Bridge Street and my team is busy delivering stage 2 of the project in the historic Lands Building next door for PLG. Combined, these two remarkable, landmark sandstone buildings will have new life breathed into them as they enter a new, exciting phase of use as shining tourism assets.
