About Jonathan Chew

INQUISITIVE BY NATURE – A SCIENTIST IN THE MAKING I hold a PhD and a BSc (Hons I) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where my doctoral research focused on the potential of palladium catalysts to prepare free phosphines and the anti-tumor properties of gold-phosphine adducts. As a recipient of the prestigious Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) International Fellowship, I pursued postdoctoral training at the University of Warwick, UK. There, I developed a cost-effective and efficient hydrogenation process to synthesize key pharmaceutical building blocks. Upon returning to Singapore, I joined A*STAR’s Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and later the National University of Singapore. My research spanned synthesizing novel 3D materials for gas storage and developing nickel-based complexes to advance hydrogen evolution reactions. FROM SCIENTIST TO ADMINISTRATOR AND POLICY-MAKER Transitioning from research to policy, I now contribute to implementing Singapore’s national strategies to drive research excellence and innovation. My current focus is on shaping frameworks and initiatives that foster impactful scientific advancements. SERVICE BEYOND CAREER – NATIONAL SERVICE In addition to my professional pursuits, my national service appointments have provided me with robust leadership skills and logistical expertise, preparing me to support the Armed Forces’ mission when called upon.
